Student Visas

Eligibility begins with acceptance into a school that is Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certified. To be considered for approval, a school must bestudent

  • A bona fide school
  • An established institution of learning or other recognized place of study
  • In possession of the necessary facilities, personnel and finances to conduct instruction in recognized courses
  • Engaged in instruction of those courses

Nonimmigrant students who come to the United States to pursue full-time academic or vocational/technical training are usually admitted in one of two nonimmigrant categories.

  • The F-1 category includes academic students in colleges, universities, seminaries, conservatories, academic high schools, other academic institutions, Fine Arts, and language training.
  • The M-1 category includes vocational, technical training, flight schools, and nonacademic schools.

Immigration is a complicated area of law. There are some students who are not eligible for Student Visas but are dependents of nonimmigrant visa holders and may attend school incidental to their derivative visa status.
